drama queen
The twins’ teacher visited this morning. The lesson today was taking care of babies. “K” brought a doll and extras including a bottle, a brush, a wash cloth, etc. I was a bit surprised with K’s lesson plan. I was thinking - “They’re just babies themselves.” I was so wrong. Melaku and Askala brushed the baby’s hair and kissed the baby. Askala spoon fed the baby. She said and signed “all done.” I’m in awe of their developmental progress. K reminded me that on their evaluation in September, neither baby imitated. These days they’re watching our every move and following along. I am so proud of them!
Last night we had a good laugh while bathing them. Melaku reached up to pull Askala’s hair while watching me out of the corner of his eye. I dramatically said “Oh no! That will hurt Askala. She will be sad!” Askala began crying and whimpering - though her hair had never been pulled. A drama queen! The more we talked, the more she carried on.
Maddie and Andrew performed well in their school Christmas program. I love seeing the kids dressed up and hearing them sing loudly.
We cooked Ethiopian tonight including INJERA! I used the recipe from Cooking Light and substituted wheat flour for the teff. It was no where close to the real deal but it worked in pinch - literally.
Here’s a link to a thought-provoking blog post that examines the cultural perceptions between Ethiopian-American and African-American as well as other black cultures. This awareness will help me more sensitively navigate various communities with which we hope to connect.
